Rætur mínar
The soil remembers
Lyrics & English
Original
Skógr stendr grœnn við fjallsins rót
Vindr ferr lágt um lauf ok mó
Á rennr köld um stein ok sand
Sól rís bjǫrt yfir fornt land
Bjǫrk ok eik í regni standa
Rætur liggja djúpt í landi
Fjallit vakir, foldin rís
Nýr dagr kemr með morginljós
English adaptation
The forest stands green at the mountain's foot
The wind moves low through leaves and heath
A cold river flows among stone and sand
The sun rises bright over ancient land
Birch and oak stand in the rain
Roots lie deep in the land
The mountain keeps watch; the earth rises
A new day comes with morning light
Original
Stattu fast
Líttu fram
Vindrinn ferr um þetta land
Hjarta slær
Jǫrðin ber
Fram skulum vér ganga hér
English adaptation
Stand firm
Look ahead
The wind moves across this land
A heart beats
The earth bears us
Here we shall walk forward
Original
Rís! Rís! Yfir fold!
Stattu fast við berg ok mold!
Vindr um fjǫll
Á rennr um dal
Fram! Fram! Yfir allt!
Skógr ok fold!
Jǫrð ok steinn!
Hér eru rætur mínar enn
Meðan sól yfir fjǫllum skín
Lifir landit
Lifir rót mín
English adaptation
Rise! Rise! Above the earth!
Stand firm beside rock and soil!
Wind around the mountains
A river flows through a valley
Forward! Forward! Across it all!
Forest and earth!
Earth and stone!
My roots are still here
As long as the sun shines over the mountains
The land lives on!
My roots live on!
Original
Nótt má koma yfir skóg
Stormr má rísa yfir lóg
Fjall stendr fast þó vindrinn slái
Rótin lifir, hvað sem nái
Fornir stígar liggja enn
Milli trjá ok grárra steina
Sporin hverfa, moldin man
Jǫrðin geymir þetta land
English adaptation
Night may come over the forest
A storm may rise across the land
The mountain stands firm though the wind strikes
The roots live on through all that comes
Ancient paths remain
Between trees and grey stones
Footprints disappear; the soil remembers
The earth keeps this land
Original

Engi vindr stöðvar oss hér

The earth bears us
No wind stops us here

Inside the song
Story & meaning
Birch and oak stand in the rain, with roots reaching deep beneath them. A river moves through stone and sand; the mountain keeps watch. Rætur mínar finds home in this living ground, in the familiar things that remain around us as weather and light change.
Footprints disappear, but the soil remembers. Old paths between trees and grey stones give that belonging a longer life than any single journey. To stand here is to feel a connection that continues beneath the surface. Even when the feet move forward and carry fire across the land, the roots are still here.
